How is Remaining to Spread Calculated in Advanced Forecasting? (Beta)

Percentage-based forecasting and remaining-to-spread amount (including actuals) features are available for configuration in the Company level Admin tool and for use in the Project level Budget tool. To enable these features, join the Forecasting: Revenue Forecasting, Percents and Actuals-Aware Remaining beta program via Procore Explore.

Depending on whether you have defined the 'Actuals Column' in your forecasting view settings, Procore calculates the values for the 'Remaining to Spread' column(s) in forecasting views using either the remaining to spread (excluding actuals) calculation or the remaining to spread (including actuals) calculation.

Calculation Methods

  • Remaining to Spread (Excluding Actuals) Calculation: Calculates remaining spread by deducting planned amounts from a spreadable column (e.g., Projected Cost To Complete) that has already had actuals subtracted out before reaching the forecast view.

  • Remaining to Spread (Including Actuals) Calculation: Calculates remaining spread by deducting both the planned amounts and posted actuals directly from the spreadable column (e.g., Estimated Cost at Completion) within the forecast view.

  • Highlights Budget Variances: Exposes over-allocations by displaying negative values (e.g., -$5.00 or -5%) when actuals along with planned spreads exceed total budget.

  • Best Used For: Percent-based forecast spreads that help track over-billing and over-spending so teams can manually rebalance future monthly forecast periods.

Example Scenario (Revenue Billing)

Consider a project with a total budget of $100. You plan to bill 5% ($5.00) in Month 1, but you actually spent $10.00:

  • Remaining to Spread (Excluding Actuals) Calculation:

    • Subtracts actuals first to establish a new net spreadable amount: $100 - $10 = $90.

    • Recalculates future monthly allocations down proportionally across remaining periods, preserving a positive remaining balance ($4.50 or 5.00%).

  • Remaining to Spread (Including Actuals) Calculation:

    • Includes actuals directly into the overall formula: $100 - $105 (Planned) - $10 (Actuals) = -$5.00.

    • Displays a Remaining ($) of -$5.00 (-5.00%), notifying you that you are over-billed and need to rebalance future months.
