Choose a Scheduling Path
Background
The first step in using the Scheduling tool is determining your source of truth. Procore offers two primary workflows to suit your team's needs:
Option 1 (Read-Only): This path is ideal for projects where the master schedule logic is maintained in an external third-party tool. Procore acts as a collaborative window—imported data is grayed out by design to preserve master logic. This option serves as your foundation for field execution, unlocking a separate, editable Lookahead tab where field teams can build out granular day-to-day plans. All dates are preserved exactly as they appear in the imported file. Re-importing a schedule under this path overwrites and replaces the previously uploaded schedule in its entirety.
Option 2 (Editable): This path allows you to manage your project schedule entirely within Procore. Whether you start from a blank slate or perform a one-time import to transition off external software, you can leverage Procore's dynamic, real-time logic updates. Future file imports under this path append new activity information rather than overwriting existing tasks. (Note: Lookahead features are not currently available for Option 2).
Things to Consider
Required User Permissions:
Admin' level permissions on the project's Scheduling tool.
Supported File Types:
Standard: Phoenix (
.ppx), Microsoft Project (.mpp), and Primavera P6 (.xer).New Beta Formats: As of July 21, 2026, native file imports are now supported in Open Beta for Asta Powerproject (.pp) and MS Project XML (.xml/ MSPDI). Note that Asta .pp and MS Project. xml formats support import only; exports are not available. Go to Manage Features With Procore Explore to join the beta.
Third-Party File Management (Save vs. Save As):
When updating an external schedule file to re-import into Procore, always use Save.
Do not use Save As. Using Save As creates a brand new schedule file with new internal activity IDs/GUIDs. Attempting to re-import a Save As file into Procore will trigger an error because it breaks breaks associations with existing Lookaheads and submittals.
Note
At this time, the latest cloud versions of P6 .xer files are not supported.
