In Beta

This feature is currently in closed beta for select Procore customers.

Procore is introducing the Direct Sub-Tier Payments feature to modernize and digitize the traditionally manual joint check process. Historically, General Contractors (GCs) have relied on physical joint checks to ensure that sub-tier vendors (such as suppliers and second-tier subcontractors) are paid, designed to assist in managing lien risk by digitizing the disbursement process. This manual method is often prone to administrative delays, lost mail, and reconciliation errors.

This new feature transitions these obligations into a digital workflow within Procore Pay, allowing subcontractors to authorize direct ACH payments to their sub-tiers. By linking these payments to confirmed identities and specific invoice amounts, Procore provides GCs with enhanced visibility and control over the disbursement process, which is designed to help mitigate the risk of overpayment or potential payment disputes.

Things to Consider

  • Two-Way Identity Verification: The system utilizes a "handshake" process based on the Employer Identification Number (EIN). Subcontractors must confirm the identity of their sub-tiers to help verify funds are directed to the correct legal entity.

  • Authorization Specificity: Authorizations are not blanket approvals; they are tied to the specific dollar amount on an invoice. If a GC modifies the payment amount after a subcontractor has authorized it, the authorization is voided to  to ensure the subcontractor reviews and approves the modified amount.

  • Integration with Manual Payments: The system is designed to recognize and account for "offline" or manual payments. To help mitigate the risk of  duplicate payments, users can explicitly allocate manual check amounts against joint check obligations within the disbursement screen.
