Tool Modes provide a dedicated workspace within the Next-Gen Viewer by displaying only the necessary controls for an active tool. This streamlined interface eliminates distractions and ensures a consistent workflow across different utilities. Using these modes helps you precisely manipulate tool controls and maintain clean visual layouts without unintentionally interfering with model objects.

Things to Consider

  • Required User Permissions

  • Additional Information:

    • Restricted Object Interaction: You cannot select, highlight, or open context menus on standard model objects while any Tool Mode is active. Left-click, middle-click, and right-click actions are limited exclusively to tool-specific controls.

    • Panel Access: You can continue to open and interact with side panels, such as the object tree, while working inside a active Tool Mode.

    • Cross-Tool Artifact Isolation: Artifacts created by other tools remain visible but become completely non-interactive. To edit or delete an existing artifact, you must exit the current mode and re-enter the specific mode used to create it.

    • Session Rollbacks: Discarding a session restores the viewer to the exact snapshot captured upon entering the mode. This action targets only the modifications made during the current active session.

Prerequisites

  • Determine whether your target tool relies on specialized keyboard shortcuts or a flyout menu. See Keyboard Shortcuts.

Steps

Enter Tool Mode

  1. Navigate to the Model Manager (Beta) tool.

  2. Open the federated project model, a project view, or a model file if you have permission.

  3. In the right toolbar, click Measure Tools to enter tool mode.

  4. Select your target tool using one of these methods.

Example: Visual Guide Only (No Audio)
This animated gif showcases the Tool Mode functions in the Right Toolbar of the Model Manger viewer.

  5. For tools with a flyout: choose from these options, depending on the tool:

    • Click toolbar button and click a sub-tool from the flyout menu.

    • Click the toolbar button to toggle a sub-tool on/off.

  6. For context menu activation: Right-click the 3D space and select an option from the context menu. For example, select Add Section Plane.

  7. For keyboard activation: Press the designated shortcut for your active tool. See Keyboard Shortcuts.

Work in Tool Mode

  1. Once a mode is active, the interactive tool's controls appear in the vertical center of the right toolbar.

  2. Interact directly with the interactive tool's controls in the 3D space. You can also apply context-sensitive actions from the overlay toolbar.

    Example

Each sub-tool has its own unique controls, pointers, and grips in the 3D space. They may also have context menus. For example, when working with a section plane, you can click choose Flip Plane or Delete Plane from the context menu.

Exit a Tool Mode

  1. Finalize your workspace session by choosing one of the following exit paths:

    • To commit your changes: Click This shows the Save and Exit button in the right toolbar in the viewer in the Model Manager tool Save and Exit or press ENTER on your keyboard to save changes and hide the interactive tool's controls.

    • To discard your changes: Click This image shows the Exit Mode icon in the Right Toolbar of the Viewer in the Model Manager tool. Clear and Exit or press ESC on your keyboard, or click an external viewpoint to perform a complete session rollback.
